City Visakhapatnam

Historically a part of Kalinga Kingdom conquered by King Ashoka in 260 BC, Visakhapatnam – now also known as Vizag – has come a long way from being a serene fishing village to a modern city, bustling with industrial activities. Nestled between the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Eastern Ghats mountain range on the other, the city offers stunning scenic views like no other Indian city does.
‘The Jewel of the East Coast’, ‘Goa of the East Coast’, and ‘The City of Destiny’ – Vizag is known by many nicknames, each of which defines a unique character of this thriving port city.
Visakhapatnam recently made it to the list of the world’s top 10 fastest growing cities, according to a study by the United Nations. It is also one of the 100 Indian cities nominated for the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission and, according to the Swachh Bharat Survekshan rankings by the Union ministry of urban development, the fifth cleanest city in India. It is no wonder then that Vizag is fast emerging as the go-to destination for job seekers in India.

Job Opportunity and Key Industries

With a GDP of US$26 billion, Visakhapatnam is the 10th largest city by GDP in India and one of the largest contributors to the economy of Andhra Pradesh. Key job generating sectors in the city include fishing, sea trade, heavy industry, and tourism. Recent years have also seen the city’s IT and pharmaceutical sectors growing at a steady pace. While being an important gateway for mineral exports, Vizag is also a thriving industrial hotspot, with the presence of SEZs and industrial corridors, such as Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone, Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), and Aganampudi Industrial Park. The city’s education sector also generates many jobs in both private and state-run schools and colleges. There are a number of acclaimed universities and technical institutions in the city, including the Andhra University College of Engineering, Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, and Andhra Medical College. Whether you are an aspiring teacher, researcher, engineer, doctor, manager or software developer, you should not have a problem finding suitable jobs in Visakhapatnam.

Heavy Industries

Heavy industries abound in the city, with most of them located in and around Gajuwaka and Industrial Estate areas. Build across an area of 20,000 acres, the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, with a capacity of 6.3MT, employs around 20000 people and earns annual revenue of more than US$2 billion. The city houses several other factories and shipyards, including the Hindustan Shipyard Limited, GAIL, BHEL, Hindustan Zinc, RINL, Dredging Corporation of India, HPCL, and Coromandel Fertilizers.

Pharmaceuticals

Visakhapatnam proudly accommodates Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC) – the only SEZ in India dedicated exclusively to Pharmaceutical companies. Owned and operated jointly by the state government and Ramky Group, JNPC is internationally famous for bulk drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Some notable global companies that have factories in JNPC include Germany’s PharmaZell, French joint venture with SNF Ltd, and Japan’s Eisai Pharma. Built over an area of 2,400 acres, the SEZ currently houses more than 100 pharmaceutical firms and provides employment to nearly 9000 people.

Fishing and sea trade

Despite industrial development, fishing continues to be a major occupation in the city. Visakhapatnam Port has a fishing harbor, which is used not only for fishing but for all kind of related activities, such as, drying, processing, and preserving fishes. The outer and inner harbors of the port are used for exporting seafood to foreign countries. Allied industries, such as ice factories surrounding the fishing harbor create hundreds of jobs as well. Visakhapatnam Port and the recently built Gangavaram Port help to boost sea trade in Vizag, with exports of petroleum, steel, fertilizer, and other products.

Information Technology

The IT sector in Visakhapatnam has been experiencing astounding growth over the past few years, with IT exports seen to grow at a whopping 90 percent per year. The government has established many special economic zones to boost the IT sector. Consequently, many acclaimed software companies, including Infotech, Wipro, and Mahindra Satyam have set up their units in the city. The proposed Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) project, if materialized, would generate around 15 lakh jobs over the next few years.
