City Coimbatore

Located on the banks of the Noyyal River, Coimbatore is the second largest city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. What makes the city different from most other South Indian cities is its relatively pleasant climate and an increasingly cosmopolitan population. There are different opinions about how Coimbatore got its name. Some historians believe Coimbatore was originally called Kovanputhur, meaning the new town of Kovan, while others say the city was named after the local goddess Kovaiamma.
According to a recent survey by the India Today Group, Coimbatore was identified as the best emerging city in India. More than 25,000 companies either have headquarters or important offices in the city. These include small and medium companies, large enterprises, and multinational companies. As such, expats or job seekers should not have a problem finding the right opportunity in Coimbatore.

Key Industries and Job Opportunity

Traditionally, textile and engineering have been the two main job generating sectors in Coimbatore. In fact, extensive cotton production and a thriving textile industry have helped the city earn a nickname – the Manchester of South India. Coimbatore is also called the Pump City, due to the fact that more than 50 percent of India’s motors and pumps are manufactured there. Recent years have also seen the city’s IT and BPO industries growing at a rapid pace.
State-of-the-art infrastructure, investment friendly policies, proximity to major south Indian cities, and a large talent pool are some major reasons for this growth. There are more than 70 arts colleges, 50 engineering colleges, many universities and medical colleges in the city. Most of the local graduates get their first job in the city itself. Acclaimed companies like Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL, Cognizant, and Robert Bosch Engineering hire hundreds of fresh graduates every year. Textile

Most of Coimbatore and its surrounding areas have the fertile black soils, which help in cotton production. Now the city houses more than 17 percent of the country’s textile mills, and many acclaimed textile research centres, including South Indian Textiles Research Association (SITRA), Sardar Vallabhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management, and the Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR). The government of India is working on establishing two Centres of Excellences, including a medical textile research institution in the city. No wonder Coimbatore generates hundreds of jobs for machine workers, cloth testers, loom operators, textile production workers, designers and textile technologists.
